Choosing
a Therapist
There are so
many therapists to choose from, how will I know who's right for
me?
Several things
are worth considering in choosing a therapist. First of all, it's
important that you feel safe with your therapist. Since this is
someone you will be sharing your troubles and problems with, you
should feel that they are on your side and that they want to
help you. You need to feel that they are approachable.
Another important
concern is credentials and licensing. In order to practice
independently in Texas, a therapist must be licensed by their professional
board as either an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), LPC (Licensed
Professional Counselor) or licensed psychologist (Ph.D.) (Note:
If someone has a Ph.D., that does not necessarily mean he or she
is licensed. You need to ask.) Having a current license means that,
in addition to having obtained an advanced degree in social work
or psychology, the clinician has completed a certain number of supervised
internship hours, has passed a licensing exam, and agrees to abide
by a professional code of ethics. A licensed therapist is also bound
by the terms of their license to complete continuing education credits
each year.
Another factor
to consider is what kinds of training the therapist has had
or is continuing to receive. For instance, if you want help with
sexuality concerns or eating disorders, find out what the therapist's
training or experience has been in working with those issues.
Finally, in
choosing a therapist who's right for you, nothing beats a face-to-face
meeting. This way you can ask your questions and see for yourself
how you feel in this person's presence.
